How to use this calculator
- Choose a month, quarter or year and gather take-home income for exactly that period.
- Add new contributions funded from that income; omit transfers between savings accounts.
- Subtract withdrawals used for spending, then compare periods using the same definition.
The formula
This household cash measure tracks contributions funded by take-home income, reduced by money drawn back for spending. Moving existing savings between accounts is not a new contribution. Investment price changes, borrowed money and employer retirement contributions are excluded from this definition.
A worked example
Take-home income of 4,000, new savings contributions of 900 and savings withdrawals for spending of 100 leave 800 net contributions. Net cash savings rate is 20%; gross contribution rate before withdrawals is 22.5%.
How to interpret your result
A negative rate means withdrawals exceeded contributions in this period. This may reflect a planned purchase rather than a lasting problem; look at a longer period and your goals before judging it.
Assumptions and limitations
Positive take-home income and nonnegative contribution and withdrawal amounts. This deliberately narrow cash measure excludes pension deductions made before take-home pay.
Not a net-worth growth rate, retirement readiness score or the national-accounts personal saving rate. A rate above 100% should prompt a check for old money, transfers or mismatched periods. Negative rates are allowed.
Common questions
Does investment growth count?
No. This measures money you contribute, not changes in asset prices.
Should I include payroll retirement contributions?
Not in this take-home cash definition. Keep a separate retirement measure or build a consistently adjusted denominator and numerator elsewhere.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. Withdrawing more than you contribute produces a negative net rate.
Is 20% a required target?
No. It is only the default worked example. Necessary expenses, priorities and income stability differ.
