How to use this calculator
- Enter a present-day expense or fixed amount in your chosen currency.
- Choose an annual scenario rate and horizon; no country rate is fetched.
- Read future cost and buying power separately, then rerun with a different rate.
The formula
Multiplication estimates the future price of a basket costing the entered amount today. Division answers a different question: what a fixed nominal amount could buy later, expressed in today’s money. The same constant annual factor connects both results.
A worked example
At an assumed 3% annually for 10 years, a basket costing 1,000 today would cost about 1,343.92. A fixed 1,000 would have buying power of about 744.09 in today’s money. Neither figure is a forecast.
How to interpret your result
Cumulative price growth and the percentage loss of fixed-cash buying power are not equal. If prices double, a fixed amount buys half as much; it does not lose 100% of its buying power.
Assumptions and limitations
One constant annual compound rate, from −50% to 100%, for up to 100 years. A rate of zero or a zero-year horizon leaves amounts unchanged. A negative rate models falling prices.
No historical CPI data, price forecast, investment return, tax, exchange rate or category-specific prediction. Country selection changes currency formatting only. Actual prices vary across time and purchases.
Common questions
Is the default rate official?
No. The 3% value is a hypothetical input for explaining the calculation, not an official rate or expected outcome.
Does lower inflation mean lower prices?
Not when inflation remains positive. Prices still rise, just more slowly. Negative inflation means the modeled price level falls.
Can I compare past years?
Use an official historical index calculator for that. This tool models a constant-rate scenario without historical data.
Does it include interest on savings?
No. The fixed-cash result assumes no nominal growth. Compare savings returns separately, with matching periods and taxes considered.
